What should you look for when choosing a studio to mix and/or master your music?
“Above all, trust your own ears." You should be able to hear noticeable improvements in audio quality and musicality from samples provided. Any studio that cannot provide samples cannot be trusted.
Listen well is my personal motto. Too many engineers turn knobs and push buttons without knowing what they are really doing and without listening to make the best choices for the music. I will never forget one of the first times I was recording at a studio: My group finished a take, and I said into the mike, looking toward the control room, “What did you think of that one?” … No answer. I looked around the live room, getting puzzled stares from the group. Breaking the silence, the engineer said, “Oh, were you talkin’ to me?” “Oh, sorry guys, I wasn’t really listening.”
No one can be an audio engineer without listening. A lot of studio owners are gear crazy, but really don’t know how to use it. As an artist with strong musical convictions, let your own ears tell you who knows what they are doing, and who doesn’t.”
