How We Work

On-Location Classical Recording

It is our belief that the most important aspect of a classical performance is the manner in which the music, performers, and space interact.  The “sound” of the concert hall is just as important as the sound coming directly from the instruments themselves.  Because of this fundamental concept, we strive to capture classical performances through a simple, straightforward, yet accurate method.  For the majority of classical projects, live concerts or recording sessions, we use two microphones.  These microphones can be thought of as your two ears.  After all, when sitting in the audience of a classical performance, you don’t have one ear on the violin, another on the cello, and another on the piano!  As a listener, you hear the combination of these sounds as the hall projects them.  Our goal is to find where the most naturally balanced combination of sound occurs in the hall for every performance, and then record that sound as if the microphones were an audience member.  Any post-production mixing necessary is minimized because the sound has already been naturally mixed in the space itself.

Editing can be performed on a project-by-project basis.  If a live concert were recorded, we can finalize the entire performance on CD as it originally happened.  All pauses between movements as well as applause will be kept as part of the recording.  If you desire, we can also eliminate any part of those gaps to make the music flow more consistently.  If your project were a recording session not open to the public, we can edit every aspect from movement pauses, to specific phrases within the music, even to specific notes.  The degree of editing is the performer’s choice, although we push to keep the majority of takes intact and with minimal splicing, as this editing can at times detract from the sense of performance and space we strive to achieve.

On-Location General Recording

Our goal is to create a comfortable, convenient recording space for all of our clients.  In order to achieve this, we bring the recording studio to you.  Be it a home, apartment, or other rehearsal space, we transform your space into an acoustically and technologically suitable recording environment.  While you relax on your favorite couch, we will set up a control area, tracking area, any necessary patch bays, and all equipment in order to begin a professional recording session.  Work is kept simple and straightforward, focusing on the positive and negative aspects of the room, instruments to be used, and overall style of the music to be recorded.

During these sessions we can edit every individual track and instrument to your liking.  If you would like to retain the live “groove” of the music, work can immediately begin on mixing and post-production.  However, we can also splice any track, at any time enabling the performer to create the “perfect” take.  All of our projects are recorded, mixed, and mastered in the digital domain enabling ease of equipment transportation, editing, and data transfer.
